BIG Days Out are back!! Returning to Cardiff Bay Yacht Club on the 14th/15th March 2026, there is sure to be something for everyone to get out on the water. New to this year's Big Days Out is dinghy foiling! With our brand new red waszps (bought with Sport Wales capital funding) we'll be running some first flight foiling sessions. Also new this year are motor cruising sessions and courses kindly supported by the team and resources from Swansea Watersports.

From novice to professional, there's something to help stretch or refresh your skills.

Dinghy Foiling

This session is for those first time foilers looking to complete their first flight!

Pre requisites: competent sailor possessing Dinghy Instructor or Race Coach qualification, wishing to work towards a foiling endorsement qualification.

RYA Safety Boat Course
RYA Safety Boat qualification provides the skills required when acting as an escort craft, safety boat or coach boat for a fleet of dinghies, windsurfers or canoes, for racing or training activities. The course includes rescue techniques and elements of race management and mark laying.

Pre requisites: minimum age 16 with RYA Powerboat level 2 and basic understanding of sailing.

RYA Regional Race Officers Course

The first step on the ladder of becoming an official RYA race officer. A day ashore of learnings. Pre-course information will be sent out for completion.

RYA Start Yachting Course

This 2 day course will give you a basic understanding of yacht handling and seamanship. The course will cover:

  • The yacht

  • Ropework

  • Rule of the road

  • Man overboard recovery

  • Clothing and equipment

  • Emergency equipment and precautions

  • Meteorology 

Pre requisites: minimum age 15 with basic knowledge of sailing/ yachting.

 

RYA Helmsman Course

This 2 day course is ideal for new owners conscious of the difficulty and hazards of boat handling in the marina. The course covers a wide range including:

  • Boat preparation

  • Boat handling

  • Types of craft

  • Engines and drives

  • Engine operation and maintenance

  • Safety and seamanship

  • Rules of the road

  • Securing to a buoy

  • Berthing alongside

  • Man overboard recovery

Motor Cruising Skills and Drills

The day will be spent doing skills and drills with Swansea Watersports. This session can be tailored to meet everyone's needs.

Yacht Cruising Skills and Drills

The aim of the day is to provide sessions to build and develop knowledge and skills. There are no pre requisites for this course and the session will be tailored appropriately. 

Senior Instructor Development Day

This is a day for Dinghy Instructors looking to do their Senior Instructor course and current Senior Instructors looking to develop their skills and knowledge. The role of a Senior Instructor is crucial to the running of a training centre- this day is a great opportunity to develop & connect with instructors and trainers.
